June 17, 2009 – Garden Up-date

The Manna Meal Community Garden project is growing great in June!
Gardeners have been dodging the rain storms this week but have still accomplished the final harvest of leaf lettuce—which was HUGE the lettuce row remnants were tilled under and now the ground is ready for planting a second crop this weekend (beans). The crop was so large we were able to share our bounty with the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter and Roark-Sullivan Lifeway center.
Charleston’s Master Gardeners came out Tuesday to help with the gardening, plus they harvested broccoli and cabbage for the soup kitchen. Last Sunday the kitchen was able to prepare a big skillet of fresh curly kale from the garden and also serve green onions, peas, and sweet leaf lettuce salad. Great feedback has been received this week about the fresh veggies.
This Saturday, June 20, we will be making the final 18 wire tomato cages needed to support our rapidly growing tomato plants; we will harvest, hoe, weed and plant too! One of our tomato plants is already loaded with cherry tomatoes. Come on out and get involved if you haven’t already done so. Our next date to work is Saturday June 20 from 8AM to 10AM. Hope to see you there!
